This page calculates the soil and water efficiency of various foods. It does not take the cost of Iron Ore into account.

Excluded from this list are Wild Onion, Burdock, Wild Carrot, Banana, Psilocybe Mushroom, Cactus Fruit, Cooked Rabbit, Turkey Slice on Plate, Cooked Fish, Turkey Drumstick, and Bowl of Turkey Broth. These all require foraged resources.

Baked Potato and Half Baked Potato are treated as the same food, as they come from the same plant.

Food value total is summed for consuming the whole item. Efficiency is food value per soil consumed.

The food value of the ingredients consumed in crafting each item is not taken into account. This is relevant, for example, with rabbit pie, where you could just roast and eat the rabbit without impacting your compost cycle. After deducting the food value of the rabbit, rabbit pie becomes much less soil efficient.

Calculations:

  • Gooseberry: 1 soil and 1 water per harvest, yields 7 berries.
    • Soil: 1 soil / 7 berries = 1/7 = 0.1429
    • Water: 1 water / 7 berries = 1/7 = 0.1429
  • carrot: 1 carrot seed, 2 soil and 1 water yeilds 5 carrots. Cost of seed is 2 soil and 1 water for 7 seeds.
    • Soil: (2 bowls soil / 7 seeds) / 5 carrots per seed + 2 bowls soil / 5 carrots = 16/35 = 0.4571
    • Hardened Row: (2 bowls soil / 7 seeds) / 5 carrots per seed + 1 bowl soil / 5 carrots = 9/35 =0.2571
    • Water: (1 bowls water / 7 seeds) / 5 carrots per seed + 1 bowl water / 5 carrots = 8/35 = 0.2285
  • Shucked Ear of Corn: 1 corn seed, 2 soil and 1 water to grow 4 corn. Cost of seed is disregarded.
    • Soil: 2 bowls soil / 4 corn = 0.5
    • Hardened Row: 1 bowl soil / 4 corn = 0.25
    • Water: 1 bowl water / 4 corn = 0.25
  • Bowl of Whole Milk: Feed a cow 1 corn and your first bucket of milk is free. Each bucket after that requires a bucket of water. Each bucket gives 10 bowls.
    • Soil: (0.5 soil / 1 corn) / (10 bowls per bucket * number of buckets collected) = 0.05 soil per milk / x
    • Water: # of buckets collected - (10 free bowls - 0.25 water per corn) / 10 free bowls = X - 0.975
  • Bowl of Skim Milk: Same as whole milk but with a lower food value.
  • Mango Slices: Cover the base of a mango tree with 3 soil from a basket and water with 1 bucket (10 bowls) of water. Yields 8 mangos.
    • Soil: 3 / 8 = 0.375
    • Water: 10 / 8 = 1.25
  • Cooked Mutton: Feed a Lamb a bowl of gooseberries (6 gooseberries) with carrot and it will grow up. Slay an adult and it drops 4 raw mutton.
    • Soil: ((1 soil / 7 gooseberries) * 6 gooseberries + 16 soil / 35 carrots) / 4 mutton per feed = 23/70 = 0.3286
    • Hardened Row: ((1 soil / 7 gooseberries) * 6 gooseberries + 9 soil / 35 carrots) / 4 mutton per feed = 39/140 = 0.2786
    • Water: ((1 water / 7 gooseberries) * 6 gooseberries + 8 water / 35 carrots) / 4 = 19/70 = 0.2714
  • Slice of Bread: Grow wheat with 2 soil and 1 water. Pound the wheat into flour and add another water to get leavened bread. Bake the bread and slice it. Yields 8.
    • Soil: 2 soil / 8 slices = 1/4 = 0.25
    • Water: (1 water + 1 water) / 8 slices = 1/4 = 0.25
  • Pork Taco: Feed a pig a bowl of corn and kill it for 4 raw pork. Combine 4 bowls of water, 2 corn and 2 limestone to get 8 corn tortillas. Cook the raw pork and combine it with a stack of 8 corn tortillas. Yields 8 pork tacos.
    • Soil: ((2 bowls of soil / 4 corn) + (2 * ( 2 bowls soil / 4 corn))) / 8 = 3/16 = 0.1875
    • Hardened Row: ((1 bowl soil / 4 corn) + (2 * ( 1 bowl soil / 4 corn))) / 8 = 3/32 = 0.0938
    • Water: ((1 water / 4 corn) + 2 * (1 water / 4 corn) + 2 water) / 8 = 11/32 = 0.3438
  • Baked Potato: Plant a potato in 2 soil, and water once, then once it's grown add another bowl of soil. It will grow some more and then you can harvest 5 potatoes, but 1 must go towards re-seeding, so 4 potatoes are harvested. The bowl of water is not consumed to produce the seed.
    • Soil: 3 soil / 4 potatoes = 3/4 = 0.75
    • Hardened row: 2 soil / 4 potatoes = 1/2 = 0.5
    • Water: 1 water / 4 potatoes = 1/4 - 0.25
  • Bean Taco: Plant 1 bean seed in 2 soil and water once to get 6 beans. The cost of the seed is 1/6 the cost of the plant. Combine 4 bowls of water, 2 corn and 2 limestone to get 8 corn tortillas. Add 1 water and the 6 beans to a stack of 8 corn tortillas to get 8 bean tacos.
    • Soil: ((2 soil / 6 bean seeds) + (2 soil / 6 beans) * 6 beans + 2 *(2 soil / 4 corn)) / 8 = 5/12 = 0.4167
    • Hardened Row: (1 soil / 6 bean seeds + (1 soil / 6 beans) * 6 beans + 2 *(1 soil / 4 corn)) / 8 = 5/24 = 0.2083
    • Water: (1 water / 6 bean seeds + (1 water / 6 beans) * 6 beans + 2 * (1 water / 4 corn) + 5 water) / 8 = 37/48 = 0.7708
