High Frequency Marconi Receiver (on)

A Radio is a communication device which facilitates global communication (over the entire server map). In order to receive a broadcast signal, both devices must be tuned to the same frequency (high, medium or low)

There are two types of radio available. The first, added in v.191,[1] consists of a Spark Gap Transmitter and a Marconi Receiver. It operates by adding and removing the Daniell Cell on the transmitter, which in turn causes a bulb to turn on and off on the receiver. This makes it suited to Morse code.

The second type of radio, added in v.194,[2] consists of an AM Transmitter, and AM Receiver. It allows normal speech-text and operates by speaking close-by to the powered transmitter.

Spark Gap Transmitter[ | ]

Add a Copper Ingot to a Copper Rod to get a spark terminal, then combine two of these, and add them to Boards. Choose the location wisely, as the transmitter can not be moved after this.

Join two Capacitors together, and add to the transmitter. Then add one Copper Coil.

Add a short, medium or long Antenna to choose high, medium or low frequency transmission respectively. Add a Daniell Cell to operate the transmitter.

Marconi Receiver[ | ]

Add a Coherer to Boards to start the Receiver. Choose the location wisely as it cannot be moved after this. Add Two Copper Coils, an Electromagnet then a Light Bulb to the receiver.

Combine two Daniell Cells and add them to the receiver.

Add a short, medium or long Antenna to choose high, medium or low frequency reception respectively.

AM Radio[ | ]

AM Transmitter[ | ]

Add Charcoal to Copper Foil, and add another Copper Foil to make a carbon sandwich. Then add Copper Wire to make a Carbon Microphone. Add this to Boards to form the Transmitter base. Choose your location wisely, as the transmitter cannot be moved after this.

Add Two Vacuum Triodes, a Copper Coil, and a Long Antenna.

Adding either one, two or three Capacitors will set the frequency to High, Medium, or Low respectively. Adding Two Daniell Cells will then power the device. The cells and capacitors can be removed again to choose a different frequency. To use the radio, stand next to the transmitter (within one or two tiles) and speak. If you also have a receiver nearby which is set to the same frequency, you will be able to tell if the device is working as you will see a duplicate speech bubble above the receiver.

AM Receiver[ | ]

Add Blank Paper to an Electromagnet to form a Loudspeaker, and add this to Boards. Choose your location wisely, as the transmitter cannot be moved after this.

Add a Vacuum Triode, followed by a Vacuum Diode, then add a Capacitor. Adding Two Daniell Cells will then power the device. These can be removed again if necessary.

Adding either a long, medium, or short Antenna will set the frequency to Low, Medium, or High respectively. Speak into an AM Transmitter set to the same frequency to test if the receiver works. The Antenna can be removed again to choose a different frequency.

History[ | ]

  • v.191 - Spark Gap Transmitter and Marconi Receiver added.
  • v.194 - AM Transmitter and AM Receiver added.
  • v.247 - Can now remove antenna from Partial AM Transmitter, allowing it to be moved.
